First known for its emphasis on alignment, Iyengar yoga is classical, Indian hatha yoga, known for its many therapeutic applications. Teachers provide direct, individualized instruction, accessible to all.
- It is an ideal system of yoga for all students, from advanced level to new beginner.
- Iyengar certified teachers are held to extremely rigid standards and will study many years before earning a certification for teaching. Continued study is a life-long process for most Iyengar teachers.
What to Expect
Students receive individualized instruction appropriate to their level, and can expect a more involved experience, with teachers adjusting and assisting to ensure that students move in a safe, efficient manner. Some classes are physically rigorous while others are slow-paced and restorative.
Accurate, precise, specific instruction is given so that students learn correct alignment within each asana (pose). Instruction-based classes prevent injury, and help students build strength, stamina, balance, and flexibility. Alignment provides the students with focus and a sense of well-being.
Iyengar Yoga is an ideal treatment for injuries and myriad medical conditions. Within classes, poses are often modified and taught therapeutically. Our teachers have a trained eye and a keen awareness of your body's movement, working in much the same way a physical therapist might work.
