Yoga in the Iyengar Tradition Yoga for Every Body

  • Iyengar yoga is an extremely comprehensive style of yoga that has become known for its focus on proper ALIGNMENT, and precision of movement while developing strength, balance and increased mobility. It is also known for its many therapeutic applications.

  • It is an ideal system of yoga practice for all levels, from the most advanced to the new beginner. Every student will receive instruction appropriate to their level, and can expect a more involved experience, with teachers adjusting and assisting to ensure that students move in a safe, efficient manner.

  • Classes are small, and students will always receive individualized instruction.

  • Iyengar certified teachers are held to extremely rigid standards and training before earning a certification for teaching. This training takes many years and is a life-long process for most Iyengar teachers.

About Our Style of Yoga

Iyengar yoga is a style that focuses on precision of movement and proper alignment for the body, while developing strength, balance and mobility. For more advanced students, there is a greater emphasis on breath work (pranayama) and meditation. Direct instruction is provided in all classes, so that even beginning students are taught to be more fully conscious.

Iyengar teachers are held to rigorous standards, and will train for years before they are certified to teach. In addition to providing a well-rounded experience for new students, Iyengar yoga classes are an excellent model for anyone who is interested in teacher-training. Students who study other methods of yoga will gain perspective and understanding that they can bring to their practice, no matter what this practice may be. Generally, students can expect a more involved experience, with teachers often assisting and even adjusting postures, to ensure students get an individualized experience.

This style often utilizes props. Props assist poses in myriad ways. They bring support that can prevent undue stress to the body. Props also help heighten a students’ awareness within the poses.

The focused and thorough style of Iyengar yoga makes it an excellent method for individuals of any experience level, any body type, and any fitness level. The extensive training of instructors and use of props also makes it available for students who have experienced injuries or illness. Park Hill Yoga offers small classes that emphasize nuanced, specific instruction which takes into account various body types and conditions. Whether you are advanced, or are a new beginner, your individual needs will be met with a balance of support and challenge.

We strongly encourage you to email or call Deborah at Park hill Yoga so that she can ensure you are in a class that suits your needs. It is preferable, though not necessary, that you complete the Basics series (six classes in six weeks) in order to gain a foundation for the practice of Iyengar yoga. We welcome you to any class, but want to ensure that you are in a level that will suit your needs.
